Nehiyaw (Cree) Nation: Witchekan Lake First Nation is a Cree community whose name derives from the Cree word for the lake on which the reserve sits. The Nation holds traditional territory in the boreal parkland of west-central Saskatchewan and is a signatory to Treaty 6.
Treaty & History: Witchekan Lake First Nation adheres to Treaty 6, signed in 1876. The community is a member of the Prince Albert Grand Council (PAGC) and the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN).
Population: The Nation has approximately 470 registered members, with members living both on-reserve and off-reserve across Saskatchewan.
Location: The reserve is situated near Spiritwood, Saskatchewan, approximately 180 km northwest of Prince Albert, surrounded by Witchekan Lake and the boreal forest landscape of the Parkland region.
Culture: The community maintains strong Nehiyaw cultural traditions including ceremonies, language preservation, and connection to the land through hunting, fishing, and trapping along Witchekan Lake and surrounding territories.
